We see, we hear, we feel. Most human activities are unthinkable without using at least one sensory organ. Already as babies we learn for example to continuously improve gripping processes in the context of hand-eye coordination.
Accordingly, it is obvious that the more flexible machines work, the more human or even cooperating work is to be performed, the more important the use of sensors detecting the environment becomes. Especially the multi-sensor fusion – the combination of information from different sources to obtain information that can not be detected with a single sensor – is becoming more and more the main focus of attention.
The (e.g. image processing based) quality control is a classic example of the use of sensors. Type and variety are determined by the use case. Apart from simple tasks (surface centers of gravity and/or diameter, etc.), industrial image processing sometimes places high demands on accuracy, speed, but most importantly on the evaluation flexibility and reliability.
A procedure that achieves reliable results in 99.99% of the cases is useless in many applications. Because ultimately this means that in 1 out of 10,000 cases false evaluations take place, which are recognized as such in the best case and only lead to the machine stop but do not endanger man and/or machine s directly or indirectly.
Only by using mathematically based algorithms the desire for 100% security can be met.
Image processing in the sense of a teachless approach also means that, as far as possible, there is no need for a product-specific image processing programmer who, especially after the article change, must create new specific programs and possibly develop them in "learning by doing". In addition, with appropriate problem analysis, the purity of the variety in the production often does not have to be given.
